The Department of Botany, was established in 1972 is one of the leading Departments in the field of teaching and research in plant sciences. Initially with B.Sc. Programme, now department offers M.Sc and Ph.D in the subject of Botany. Eventually, our department is first department to host PG course of botany in university and the PG programme was started in 1992. The department offers M.Sc. (Botany) with specialization in Mycology and plant pathology. Since its inception, the progress of the department has been remarkable and linked with the efforts of all former faculty members to all presently working faculty members. Even though the department has significantly contributed in various academic and research areas it continues to strive for excellence. Currently, our lab is recognized as research center and is continuously working on various research projects funded by UGC, DST and other agencies.

“MUSHROOM IN KITCHEN: RECIPE & PREPARATION” 2021-10-02 34 Although we all know that fungi are crucial to our very existence, mostly people and even many biologists do not realize this. They do not know that our planet’s ecosystems would not function without fungi- There would be no fertile soil, no plant life, no herbivores, no carnivores and no humans. This matters from many perspectives. When people understand and care about fungi, there will be a much stronger chance that they will protect them, and even invest in trying to find out more about them. At National Botanic Garden of Wales, there was a brainstorming session to come up with ideas on how to broaden awareness of fungi. Someone asked whether there was a world fungus day. The answer at the time was sadly no, so we decided to aim to have one. This year we want to start World Fungus Day, which would have far greater impact than National Fungus days or more disparate fungal events. So keeping this in mind department of Botany of Brijlal Biyani Science College, arranged a competition to spread awareness among the students and people about mushroom. The main objectives behind the organization of this event were. 1. To create awareness about the importance of fungi among the people. 2. To encourage the stakeholders for fungal study. 3. To aware the common people about the nutritional value and benefits of Mushroom. 4. To explore the knowledge of various stakeholders about the fungi. For this competition total 34 participants were registered. Out of them 12 participants present their dishes offline while other submits their recipes online. The competition is judged by Chef of Renowned hotel in Amravati. Four prizes are declared for competition. Registration and Participants Responses More than 30 students has registered and participated in the competition from different renowned institute and universities of the country. Pachmarhi Tour Report 2022-03-03 30 Three days Educational trip was organized by P. G. Department of Botany, Brijlal Biyani Science College, Amravati on March 3, 2022 to visit Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh. The tour comprised students of M.Sc. Ist year and IInd year accompanied by faculty members, Asst. Prof. Gokul Bajaj and Miss. Monali Lohkare from Dept. of Botany. All the students were directed to gather at Badnera railway station at 11:30AM. Head of the department Dr. N. H. Shahre and Dr. S. J. Ishwarkar wished all the students best and safe journey. On 3rdApril 2022 we went to pachmarhi by train and we reached there on 4th April 2022. Then we checked in to Hotel and taken breakfast and then we went for sightseeing Pachmarhi comprises three protection sites: the Bori Sanctuary, Satpura National Park and Pachmarhi Sanctuary – otherwise known as the Satpura Tiger Reserve. The Pachmarhi Plateau is also known as the ‘Queen of Satpura’, because it contains valleys, marshes, streams and waterfalls, all of which have led to the development of a unique and varied biodiversity. Forests represent approximately 63% of the biosphere reserve’s area, while agricultural lands (30%), waste lands (2.18%), water bodies (5%) and human settlement areas (0.54%) account for the remainder. Tectona grandis (Teak) and Shorea robusta (Sal) are the most common and unique flora species found in the forests, with the latter found nowhere else in India. Tropical moist deciduous forests, tropical dry deciduous and central Indian sub-tropical hill forests are the major ecosystem types within Pachmarhi. The climate differs at all mountain levels and is characterized by strong monsoons. There exist more than 150 species of flora used for medicinal purposes. In addition, 60 species of pteridophytes have been recorded, 48 of which are types of fern. Important species include Psilotum triquetra (whisk fern) and Ophioglossum nudicaule (Adder’s-tongue ferns). The largest wild herbivores found in the reserve are Gaura, which together with bears, tigers and leopards, Ratufa indica (Giant Squirrel) and Spilornis cheela (Crested serpent eagle) are rare and endangered. Lastly, over 50 mammal species, 254 bird species, 30 reptile species and 50 butterfly species live in the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve is characterized by high population growth, with Gond tribes accounting for 50% to 90% of the tribal population. They live in the forests and therefore have a special connection to the reserve. Korkus tribes introduced the cultivation of potatoes and made use of honeycombs to produce honey in significant quantities for commercial use. The area used to be notorious for hosting evil spirits, diseases and dangerous beasts. Captain J. Forsyth discovered the area in 1862 and remarked upon the extensive cave network. These caves are of great archaeological interest, containing rock paintings up to 2,500 years old. Today, many Hindus festivals are celebrated near the reserve. ‘Nagpanchmi’ is celebrated in summer and the ‘Maha Shivratri’ fair occurs in March. Places we visit in Pachmarhi  Pandav Caves  Bee Fall  Jata Shankar Caves  Bade mahadev  GuptMahadev  Museum  Sun set point  Champak lake Pandav caves According to a legend, these caves were built by five Pandava brothers of Mahabharatha era during their thirteen years of exile. The caves are situated on a hilltop and provide an excellent vantage point. Bee Fall This is a waterfall in Pachmarhi. It is named as such because from a distance the waterfall sounds like a bee. Bee Falls takes its name from bees since this place is famous for honey bees. Jata Shankar Caves These are mountain caves with fresh water dripping from them. One can witness ecosystem at work out here with mountains feeding the streams with fresh water, the water that they soak-in during autumn. As the name suggests, these caves and many others like these are the abode of lord Siva. Bade Mahadev BadaMahadev is one of the ancient temples in Pachmarhi and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to the mythology, BadaMahadev Cave is the place where Lord Vishnu killed Demon Bhasmasura taking the form of Mohini, a celestial beauty. Hence, this cave is an important pilgrimage site as well as a symbol for goodness prevailing over evil. GuptMahadev It is a few meters walk from the parking and then you come to a Hanuman statue, where there is a narrow cave opening. Only about 8-9 persons are allowed inside at a time as the cave is very narrow. Its not worth the wait especially if there is a long line. Mesuem Bison Lodge once used to be the resident of British man Captain Forsyth, who came across Pachmarhi in 1857 while leading his troop to Jhansi and settled down here. Built-in 1862, it is one of the oldest buildings in the pristine hill town of Pachmarhi. Sun set Point This view point is visited by the travellers in the evening to view the sunset. Dhoopgarh point is also a place to relax as there is a beautiful well maintained garden with beautiful plants and trees around the point. Outside the park there are small eateries offering tea and light refreshments to bide away the time till sunset. Champak Lake This is also called Champak Lake. It is a good place to spend time with family. You can go boating, horseriding&ziplining here. Pachmarhi is a pulchritudinous town; the Lake adds to its beauty.
