Vermicompost is an Extension activity of the Department of zoology. This activity is running by this department since the year 2003.
We used cement tanks (1.2x2x1 feet) for the preparation of compost. Four cement tanks were arranged on the plane platform behind the wall of the zoology laboratory. The cement tanks were specially designed for the compost. One outlet for drainage is made at the base and six ventilators wholes were made at the neck region.
Eiseina foetida is the fast growing and most commonly used species of earthworm were used for the culture. These seeds of these worms were the product of our own compost and we are self sufficient as we have our own culture.
The beds were prepared by using the college garden waste materials, lawn cuttings, cow dung, etc. Water was daily showered to maintain the moisture. As the compost tanks are on the ground there is a threat for the insects particularly from the red ants. So to protect them insecticide were used.
This year due to Covid Pandamic 19 the students were not allowed to participate in this activity. So the compost was sold among the staff members. The collected amount was deposited in the college office.
In this year 2020-21 Rs. 300/- (Three hundred only) were deposited on 31st March 2021.
